Heading to travel in Africa is an exciting occasion for anybody and for some known reason, it seems to bring with it a combination of nerves, excitement and a sense of the unexpected compared to other destinations around the world. Even Brodie, the owner of the budget travel blog Aussieinwanderlust, found Africa to be a country full of the unexpected. After travelling to over 40 countries around the world he wants to share with you some tips and experiences he learnt while spending some time in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. If you are planning a trip to Africa yourself in the future then these travel tips are for you.
Why is Africa so amazing to travel in?
Africa is a continent that has so much to offer. There are numerous documentaries created on the incredible landscape and ever-changing scenery that I hear from many would-be travellers that they are worried the reality will don’t reach the expectation.
I’m happy to say that it couldn’t be further from the truth. The wildlife on offer and the locations you can witness them in is something truly unique and wonderful to Africa. Watching the “circle of life” in the full show gives people a new perspective on life. Watching as lions, elephants, hippos, buffalo and more go about their day to day lives is a reason in itself to make the effort to visit Africa.
Then, of course, the added bonus of having landmark locations such as Victoria Falls, the Okavanga Delta and Chobe National Park make it simply irresistible.
What can you expect when travelling to Victoria Falls?
It shouldn’t come as any surprise that the main reason for tourists to visit the area known as Victoria Falls is to view one of the seven natural wonders of the world in real life. It is generally acknowledged as the largest waterfall in the world, although it is technically neither the tallest or widest found on earth.
You can expect to find the town of Victoria Falls to be one of small size but with so much tourism visiting the area every year you can find all the facilities you require. It has many different restaurants, multiple accommodation options and an exciting list of both family-friendly and adventure styled activities to choose from.
In fact, there is so much to do that I would suggest planning to stay a minimum of 4 days to avoid the disappointment of not having enough time to do everything you want. Activities such as white-water rafting, visiting the waterfalls, swimming in devils pool, completing a wildlife safari and doing a helicopter flight over Victoria Falls are just some of the options available to visitors.

Some quick tips to visiting Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls is a place that does require a little bit of forward planning from tourists before arriving. Having things such as your accommodation and a few tours pre-booked and organised will ensure you have the opportunity to do everything you wanted. There are times in Victoria Falls, when it’s busy, that activities will become booked out and if you are only in the town for 3 or 4 days you could find yourself unable to do all the activities that you wanted. Below is a list of other handy travel tips to consider when travelling to Victoria Falls.
- Choose an accommodation that is close to the main street of Victoria Falls and also close to the entrance of the waterfalls. This will ensure you can walk back from the restaurants of an evening without requiring a taxi. Find a great choice of accommodation here.
- Ensure you get cash changed into US dollar or the local Zimbabwe currency before travelling to Victoria Falls. The country is low on physical cash because of some questionable political acts.
- If you are planning to visit Zambia or the devils pool attraction you will need to get a double visa for both the Zimbabwe and Zambia country. It is best and cheaper to get a combined visa when first entering the country.
- Stay in well-lit areas after dark or catch public transport if unsure of where you are.
- Viewing Victoria Falls from the air is a must-do activity so you can fully see and appreciate the size of the waterfall.
- Plan your trip according to the best time of year for the activities you want to do.
White-water rafting, devils pool and game viewing are impossible to do at certain periods throughout the year. The waterfalls are also impossible to view if the mist and water flow is too strong. Find out the best time of year to visit Victoria Falls is depending on what you want to do.
Africa is sure to live up to even the highest of expectations held by travellers before arriving. It is a magical place that has surprises found around every corner of your trip. The locals are only too happy to share with you their local traditions, homemade drink and food recipes and show off the amazing landscape that is the African continent. Embrace it all and hold on for the ride of your life.
